Students Denied Entry to Mayor's Address, Demand Accountability

Rochester, NY -- At 7:00 pm 13 members of Rochester Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) arrived at the Rochester Memorial Art Galley intending to listen to Mayor Robert Duffy's State of the City address. Despite there being space in the main room and an abundance of space in the overflow room, 10 members of Rochester SDS were denied entry to the event. When two SDS members who were previously inside went to find out about the problem outside, they were denied reentry. It is very telling that while these students were being escorted off museum property, steel magnate and charter school director Joe Klein was being escorted in--that is, into the rooms that were allegedly "to capacity."

May Day 2010 Sparks New Collaborations

May Day in Rochester this year saw a coming together of dozens of groups for the planning a participation of a Celebration of Worker's History. Julie Shmidke, an organizer from Next Generation United opened the festivities by explaining the History of May day:

"Today is the day the world celebrates the struggle of workers who won the 8 hour work day. Its a Holiday that started here in America and is celebrated all over the world, except for in America. They took it away from us years ago because it was too scary and too dangerous and we asked too many questions. The last few years in cities around the country workers have been fighting to bring it back, for Immigration Reform, for workers rights, for all the things that we fight for to make our lives better"

This 8 minute video features short snip-its of the speeches, chants and signs from Saturday.

Divestment failing at UC Berkeley

Berkeley Divestment – Everyone Loves a Circus!

Word on the streets is that an override vote on the UC Berkeley divestment veto may not take place tonight. If that’s the case, I may move onto other topics between now and whenever that vote happens. But not before alerting the friends I’ve been making at Berkeley about the fun they can expect when “The Circus” comes town!

“The Circus” is what shows up whenever a civic institution (like a university, city, or church) wittingly or unwittingly flirts with a divest-from-Israel campaign.

Who Wants to Take over the Education System?

I was a volunteer in the War on Terror and I come from a large family of teachers. A lot of people are trying to do something about the education system. This is a blueprint of science education in America anyone can use to prove how the "education" system trains Americans to depend on imperialism.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
