Name: The Impact of Mass Incarceration on Families

Time: 7:00PM – 9:00PM

Date: Monday, October 20, 2014

Location: Flying Squirrel Community Space, 285 Clarissa St., Rochester, NY 14608

Description: We'll have a panel with two very special guests: Pastor Nina Warr and Precious Bedell.

Pastor Nina Warr, of Inner Faith Gospel Tabernacle, will talk about her experience raising multiple sets of grandchildren, grandnieces, and grandnephews even as her own children languish in prison. She will talk about the barriers she encounters everyday as she raises these children even as an unjust system of police, lawyers, judges and prisons strip her loved ones of their freedom and creates unnecessary and unfair challenges for familial care and community dignity.

Precious Bedell, director of Turning Points Family Center, will speak about her organization and what they do. In short, Turning Points acts as an information center where families whose lives are touched by incarceration can get access to resources or be made aware of the resources that are available in the community. Ms. Bedell will talk about the prison industrial complex, how it negatively affects families—especially women—and what we can do about it.

Question and answer / discussion to follow the presentations.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
