Slut Walk Rochester 2016

Friday April 29th, 2016

Liberty Pole, Downtown Rochester

Our clothing does not offer our consent

The 5th annual Slut Walk Rochester will be held Friday April 29th @ 5pm until 7pm

Slut Walk is an international event that originated in Toronto, Canada in 2011 and takes place annually to bring communities together around the issues of sexual harassment and violence.  The original Slut Walk was held in response to a statement made by a Toronto police officer: “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized”.  Statements like these place support on the common misconception that women have control over being victimized and are ultimately responsible for being raped.  This is an example of victim-blaming and slut-shaming; and it will no longer be tolerated.

About 683,000 rapes occur every year.  This breaks down to 56,916 per month, 1871 per day, 78 per hour and 1.3 per minute.  Of these sexual assaults 68% will go unreported to police.  98% of rapists will never spend a day behind bars (RAINN, 2014).  Rape culture has been created by victim-blaming and slut-shaming. There should not be blame placed on both the perpetrator and the victim, solely the perpetrator. On April 29th, the women in Rochester will be coming together to reclaim our right to not be harassed and defend that our clothing does not offer our consent.

This years Slut Walk is being organized by two SUNY Brockport Social Work Students; Nicole Fanelli and Amber Mesita, and will be joined by fellow Brockport classmates and citizens in Rochester at the Liberty Pole at 5pm and marching through the streets of Downtown Rochester demanding an end to rape culture.  25% of college women have been victims of some sort of sexual assault (National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 2015). With Rochester being home to numerous college campuses it is imperative that this issue does not go unnoticed in our community.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"
