Date/Time:
Mon, 9/3 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm

Flying Squirrel Community Space

285 Clarissa St., Rochester, New York

6:45 - 7:15 Meet the Worker Justice Group & Workers who are fighting back & winning
7:15 - 8:15 Movie Screening: Finally Got the News
8:15 - 9:00 Open Discussion

FINALLY GOT THE NEWS is a forceful documentary about the League of Revolutionary Black Workers in Detroit auto factories. The film traces their efforts to build an independent black labor organization.

"Although most histories of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements give greater attention to [other groups]... the League [of Revolutionary Black Workers] was in many respects the most significant expression of black radical thought and activism in the 1960s. The League took the impetus for Black Power and translated it into a fighting program focusing on industrial workers." —Manning Marable, Director, Institute for Research in African-American Studies, Columbia University

"A classic! Rather than the lock-stepped, black-bereted, leather-jacketed Panther units of other films, FINALLY shows rather ordinary people becoming very angry with the system. Ideological in the best sense: it is a film about ideas [and] presents a serious strategy for mass working class action... It speaks of a specific time and specific experiences in terms that will remain relevant as long as working people are not able to control their own lives." —Dan Georgakas, for Cineaste

"[The League of Revolutionary Black Workers]... was one of the most important radical movements of our century - a movement led by black revolutionaries whose vision of emancipation for all is sorely needed today." —Professor Robin D.G. Kelley, New York University

WORKER JUSTICE GROUP meets weekly to build a grassroots-led worker defense committee that empowers, educates, politicizes, & organizes low-wage workers to learn their rights, file pro se complaints, take direct action, launch public campaigns, & fight wage theft & workplace exploitation.

In the spirit of self-empowerment & collective learning, at every other meeting we hold worker power trainings.

We believe that worker justice and transformative social change can only come from grassroots movements that build worker power, resistance, and self-determination.

We believe in building an inclusive grassroots worker movement of poor & working people, including workers of color, womyn workers, immigrant workers, unemployed workers, welfare workers, incarcerated workers, and other unrecognized workers.

Account Creation Policy Change

Rochester Indymedia is now requiring editor approval for account creation.

We came to this decision after we had repeated spam posted to our website that caused difficulty with the website's functioning.  We will still have open publishing and keep our site as nonrestrictive and accessible as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.  As before, we will continue to be Rochester's grassroots news and education site.  Thank you for your continued support and remember, "Don't hate the media, be the media!"

Editorial Meeting Times / Locations

The Rochester Independent Media Center (R-IMC) is no longer meeting regularly.
We will set up meetings by necessity and appointment. Please contact us at rochesterindymedia@rocus.org.
Our home is still the Flying Squirrel Community Space at 285 Clarissa St. Occasionally, we hold meetings at RCTV located at 21 Gorham Street.
